2022-05-15 Kung-Fu Blackbird

We don’t see an Eurasian Jay very often in our garden, maybe once or twice a year. So when this one flew in I immediately grabbed my camera to take some pictures. After a short while the jay jumped on the branch of a nearby tree. Suddenly he swang around and only later in camera I saw why. A blackbird was attacking the jay in order to defend his close by nest. In the first image of this attack the blackbird literally seems to use some kung-fu techniques to defend his territory.

The conditions to photograph were difficult. Dark clouds above my location indicating almost immediate rain, sunset almost complete, there was just one last ray of light, luckily it was behind the wings of the blackbird in the last image.
